Marcie Colleen is a former classroom teacher turned picture book author. As a high school English teacher, Marcie always made sure to stress revision. However, as a writer she learned the hard way. Marcie’s forthcoming picture book The Adventure of the Penguinaut (Scholastic) sold after the thirty-fifth draft! That sale was quickly followed by Love, Triangle, which sold at auction in a two-book deal to Balzer+Bray/HarperCollins.
In addition to becoming a pro at revision, Marcie is an expert on creating highly acclaimed Teacher’s Guides that align children's books with the Common Core and state mandated standards. She is a frequent presenter at SCBWI conferences and her educational work in children’s literature has been recognized by School Library Journal, Publisher’s Weekly, and the Children’s Book Council. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Education of English and Language Arts from Oswego State University and a master’s degree in Educational Theater from New York University. Sudipta is an award-winning author of over 40 books spanning almost every genre of children's literature. She sold her first picture book in 2004. Since then, she has 18 picture books either published or scheduled for publication. At a time when the picture book market is considered "soft," Sudipta has learned how to write manuscripts that sell -- and it is that knowledge that informs her teaching philosophy. Who Should Take This Class
Revising Picture Books is for writers of all levels. Beginning Writers will establish a proper and strong foundation for all future writing. Intermediate Writers and Advanced Writers will fine tune their skills to perfect their works-in-progress. Because each class is highly interactive, each student has many opportunities to get what he or she specifically needs from Marcie, Susan, Sudipta, and the class community at large.
The Picture Book A to Z series is designed to be a collection of master level classes that cover all of the fundamentals of picture book craft. While each class is complete on its own, taken together, the series will teach you everything you ever wanted to know about picture books -- and a lot more! In January 2015, author Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen is proud to offer the second in this series, a five-week course on Character Building in Picture Books.
Susan Hawk is excited to join the faculty of Kidlit Writing School, fresh off her participation in Kidlit Summer School. As an agent, Susan Hawk represents authors who write for children of all ages, babies to teenage. Before agenting, Susan spent over fifteen years in children's book marketing at Penguin, Henry Holt and North-South Books. While at Penguin, Susan also worked for a time in Dutton Editorial, acquiring select picture book and YA projects for that list. Her favorite part of that time was reading new submissions -- finding something wonderful and imagining where it can go was thrilling to her then and remains so now.
What You Will Learn
Successful picture book authors know that the real writing starts after the first draft is written. This course will teach you the fundamentals of revising your manuscripts starting with Action, Beginning, and Character-- and then, as with other courses in the A to Z series, literally taking you through the alphabet. Each topic will be explored in depth, both in the lessons and in the discussion forums and webinars. The writing exercises that are a part of the course are designed to help you apply the lessons to your own writing seamlessly and immediately. By the end of the course, you will never look at writing (or RE-writing) a picture book the same way again!
The March 2016 course will be taught by Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen, Marcie Colleen, and special guest lecturer, Agent Susan Hawk of the Bent Agency!
